Treoir – Cardinal Directions

Irish Cardinal Directiona: Soir, Siar, Clé and Deas – East(forward), West(behind), North(left), South(right).

Treoir (directions) were also important to the people of Ireland and the Sun played an important part of the cardinal directions too. Just as with the ancient Neolithic stone buildings, the druids and Celts always had to be facing towards the rising Sun in the East of Ireland. We find evidence of this in the Irish language.

The Irish word for East is ‘Soir’ (pronounced sir), but it also means to move forward.

The Irish word for West is ‘Siar’ (pronounced sheer), but it also means behind.

The Irish word for North is ‘Clé’ (pronounced clay), but it also means to the left.

The Irish word for South is ‘Deas’ (pronounced dyas), but it also means to the right.

So in Irish the Celts are Druids and even in todays modern Ireland, we are really saying I am going to Leftern Ireland, or to Righern Ireland, rather than saying I am going Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland.
